The guy is a giant who can easily be mistaken for a basketball player wandering lost on a baseball diamond.
Aaron Judge is listed at 6-foot-7, weighing 230 pounds who already hit this moonshot in spring training, reminding all analysts of his enormous power potential (see below).
But in his short time in the Major Leagues at the end of last season, Judge’s one major flaw was apparent to everyone watching him bat – the mighty swings and just as mighty misses.
He struck out 42 times in 92 at bats (nearly 46% of the time!) That needs to go down if Judge is to be continually taken seriously as a top prospect. Most seem to be chalking his over aggressiveness to a less than smooth transition playing in the big leagues.
In fantasy baseball circles, Judge is number eight of 50 top fantasy baseball prospects in 2017 according to ESPN’s Tommy Rancel (article accessible as an ESPN Insider).
Judge’s rookie card value has dropped since his first call up late last season with his 2013 Bowman Chrome base auto (BGS Graded 9.5) sold for $75 earlier this month. It makes him a potential buy low, but that’s if you believe he can adjust to Major League pitching and start bashing the balls out of the stadium more times than looking back to see the ball in the catcher’s mitt.
One more caveat: his value might take a slight dip if he doesn’t win one of the outfield positions out of spring training. But most think he should beat out Rob Refsnyder for the gig.
What do you think? Another Giancarlo Stanton in the making or just another overhyped, strikeout prone prospect that never played up to his potential?
