Opened a box of 2019 Allen & Ginter: Was it worth it?

Visit our Daily Auctions page to see the latest sports card deals on auction ending daily! And listen to our podcast Cards To The Moon!

Every collector hopes for a big hit whenever they open a hobby box of sports cards.

But more often than not, what you can sell financially usually doesn’t surpass what you bought the box for (at least for what the hits are valued at right now).

It’s still fun to open nonetheless and the Allen & Ginter set is always a fan favorite.

Here’s what we got from our box and the approximate market value based on eBay prices. The box cost approximately $100US.

HIT #1 and #2: Maikel Franco (FSRA-MF) and Chris Sale relic cards (FSRB-CS)

Relic cards can be had for pretty cheap with these ones ranging from $2 – $7. We priced both for $7.

HIT #3: 2019 Allen & Ginter | Jay Larson | Mini Framed Auto #MA-JL (Black SP 19/25)

There’s already one listed (Black Frame numbered to 25) for this mini-framed auto of comedian Jay Larson priced at $99US. We listed for $95.

HIT #4: Clayton Kershaw Oversized Box Loader

Currently listed for $4.99 on eBay.

NOTABLE CARDS: Lot of 12 SP base cards

This SP base cards numbered #350 and up includes top prospect Eloy Jimenez. Currently listed for $9.99.

Other notable cards found in this box include a no-numbered (/50) A&G back card of Brian Dozier ($7.99) and a 3-card lot of mini Black Bordered cards which include Post Malone, Hideki Matsui, and Dereck Rodriguez ($7.99).

If all the cards sold for what they’re currently listed at, we’d get back $133 minus 10% (eBay fees), which equals $120.

That’s a profit of about $20 but without Hit #3, this box could be considered a major bust as it holds more than 70% of the value.

That’s not surprising as it usually comes down to the one major hit of the box whether it was worth the quick investment.

Nevertheless, it was still a fun box to break.
