Vintage sports card profile: Tom Seaver

Tom Seaver, aka “Tom Terrific”, is one of the best all-time pitchers to play the game of baseball.
His statistics over his 20-year career speak for themselves, which include 311 wins, 3,640 strikeouts, and a terrific 2.86 ERA. He’s also a three-time Cy Young award winner and National League Rookie of the Year recipient after his amazing 1967 debut season.
His 1967 Topps rookie card, which he shares with fellow New York Mets player Bill Denehy, is Seaver’s only recognized rookie card.

Career: Played for four teams from 1967 to 1986, but his primarily recognized for his time as a New York Met and still holds the record for most wins as a Met. Along with his 300-plus wins and 3,000-plus strikeouts, Seaver also pitched 61 shutout games and was easily inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992. On this day (April 22) in 1970, Seaver set the record with 10 consecutive strikeouts and went on to strike 19 that game against the San Diego Padres.
Card facts: His 1967 Topps rookie card is shared by fellow New York Mets Brian Denehy. While the quantity of this particular card isn’t exceedingly rare, it is still difficult to find one that’s well centred. One that’s PSA Graded 8 was recently sold for just more than $2,200 (in April 2017).
