The $8,000 price tag for the 2023-24 Victor Wembanyama Topps Mercury set is steep for most collectors especially considering each box comes with just eight basketball cards.
But Wembanyama, the NBA’s hottest rookie in 2023-24, is at the center of this set, and the hype is growing on these ultra-rare cards.

So as mentioned off the top, the Topps Mercury set features eight cards, which include (as stated on the Topps website):
8 Cards Per Box
Each card is encased in a plastic magnetic case and sealed in a labeled foil wrap.
(1) Autograph-Relic Card /99 or lower
Game-Worn Jersey Relics from Wemby’s rookie season, including his debut and 1,000th career point game. Descriptions of Game-Worn Relic Date and Game on every card back! Low-numbered cards feature incredible relic patches including Laundry Tags, Jumpman Logo.
(1) Chromium Autograph Card /99 or lower
Chromium autograph cards picking up 10 of the Victor Wembanyama cards from the base checklist. Look for inscriptions from the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year.
(2) Chromium Base Cards
Chromium cards featuring an all-Wemby 20-card checklist.
(3) Chromium Base Parallel Cards /99 or lower
Chase an stunning array of parallels including Refractors #’d to 99, Alien Face Wave Refractors #’d to 5, and 1/1 SuperFractors.
(1) Chromium Insert Card /99 or lower
Chromium cards featuring retro designs from Topps Chrome and Topps Basketball along with original new subsets. /10, /5 and 1/1 parallels will feature bonus on-card autographs of Victor Wembanyama.
Plus they have bonus hits including dual autograph cards which will replace a Base Card in 1:70 Base Card Packs.
Chase Chromium Dual-Autograph cards limited to 10 copies or less, where Wembanyama shares the spotlight with an exclusive group of fellow Rookies of the Year or legends of the game. The one everyone will be hoping to hit is the Wemby-Lebron 1/1 dual autograph as pictured below.
What Are the Top Chase Cards?
So, what makes the Victor Wembanyama Topps Mercury basketball cards buzz worthy? The chase cards are the ones driving most of the buzz, and for good reason:
- 1/1 Jordan Logo Autographed Relic: This is a truly unique piece, blending one of basketball’s most iconic symbols with a Wembanyama autograph.
- Dual Autograph Wembanyama/LeBron James: As mentioned already, can you imagine owning a card featuring the signatures of both Wemby and King James? That’s basketball royalty, all on one card.
- Autograph and Inscribed Cards: Wembanyama’s signature cards are hot commodities in this set. Some of them even come with inscriptions, adding an extra layer of rarity.
- Parallel Inserts: Topps is known for its exciting parallels. With various colors and designs, these are some of the most collectible cards in the set.
Is the Victor Wembanyama Topps Mercury Set Worth the Hype?
That said, the set does come with a hefty price tag. If you do the math, most will lose money on it if you don’t hit one of the more rare relic autograph cards or the big chase cards featuring dual autographs of big star players with Wembanyama.
If you buy into a break for one slot of the eight available, upon release, that will set you back about $1,250.
Which means if you don’t hit at least a good autograph card, you’re losing money again. How much money can you lose?
Early sales of the numbered parallel non-autograph cards sold for $250. Then a regular non-numbered base cards could go for about $100. That’s a total potential loss of $1,150.
Just keep this in mind if you’re buying into a break.
