Yordano Ventura died way before his time.
There will be many articles written about his professional accomplishments, the void he leaves in the clubhouse, and all that potential now lost forever. It’s tragic.
It was the same for Miami Marlins ace phenom Jose Fernandez and highly touted St. Louis Cardinals prospect Oscar Tavares (who coincidentally was a close friend of Ventura’s and a fellow Dominican).
The tragic deaths of these young superstar athletes goes beyond the game of baseball itself and it certainly means infinitely more than how it impacts the hobby world.
As a human being, there are immediate feelings of shock and sadness at the loss of life cut far too short. As a fan of baseball, and sports in general, there is sorrow over the loss of extraordinary talent far too early.
For many hobbyists, it’s why we collect baseball cards of our favorite stars – to admire their athletic capabilities and to root for their ongoing success.
Now their cards, like photos and mementos of lost loved ones, have become a reminder of the tragedy and what could have been.
