Back in 2013 when Wil Myers was called up to play for his former team the Tampa Bay Rays, the hype was through the roof – like many top prospects seem to be these days.
He performed admirably, winning the American League rookie of the year honors. But the following year was forgettable after he suffered an injury while running into Desmond Jennings. When Myers returned to game action, he hit .222 the rest of the 2014 season.
Whether the Rays were looking to rebuild at the time, Myers was traded to the San Diego in a multi-team transaction and the buzz on the talented outfielder died down.
Fast forward to the 2017 season and the Padres look to have one of the more exciting, young teams with great potential that includes rookies Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe.
And right in the heart of the lineup is none other than Myers who just hit for the cycle, demonstrating his speed and power – two factors why he was considered a top prospect four years ago.
The shine must have worn off a bit because his 2010 Bowman Chrome Prospects base auto (BGS Graded 9.5/10) was recently sold for just $99.
After his brilliant performance this week, his rookie card value seems to have rebounded nicely with the lowest price on eBay being $150.
With his pedigree and his potential, it seems there is still an opportunity to buy low here.
