Playing the high risk, high reward game with St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Alex Reyes

Out of curiosity, I thought I’d check how much the 2015 Bowman Chrome Prospect base auto (BGS Graded 9.5/10) for St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Alex Reyes was going for now since he is out for the year after requiring Tommy John surgery.
For a highly-touted prospect coming into this season with expectations he’d crack the Cardinals starting rotation, Reyes auto rookie card can be had for $50 on eBay.
screen-shot-2017-02-15-at-10-36-02-amWe’ve already written why it’s risky in the first place to invest in pitchers, using Reyes as an example.
But sometimes it’s those times when a player is having a down year and slumping badly, or in Reyes’ case, recovering from surgery that the card value decreases to a point where it becomes a tempting investment.
That’s assuming of course you still believe said player has the underlying skills to reach his potential as an elite baseball player.
Because really, who doesn’t have bad days or stays completely healthy, especially playing a game that requires players to compete day in and day out for a long 162-game season?
In Reyes’ case, you’ll have to wait a full season and maybe more to see how he rebounds from his surgery. But he certainly has the top prospect pedigree and has already demonstrated in his short time during spring training that he has the raw skills to be a great pitcher.
Then again, pitchers in general are risky investments so take caution.
