Anytime a pitcher pitches a no-hitter, it’s a great accomplishment. To do so on a day that has extra meaning makes it really special.
Screen Shot 2017-06-03 at 9.50.24 PM.pngThat’s exactly what Miami Marlins pitcher Edison Volquez did, throwing a 98-pitch, 10-strikeout game on Saturday – the same day his good friend Yordano Ventura would have turned 26. Ventura tragically died in a car accident in January.
He also dedicated the day to the late Jose Fernandez, the former Marlins ace pitcher who also tragically died way before his time in a boating accident.
With that kind of narrative, Volquez’s accomplishment today was tremendous. But the value of his cards (including his 2005 Bowman Chrome Draft base rookie card) won’t be worth much more even after this game. An ungraded rookie card can be bought for $1.
There should be a Topps Now card for his performance, however, and that might be worth getting – especially knowing the circumstances in which he pitched his first no-hitter.
