Byron Buxton was supposed to be the next great young player to enter the majors but when the season started he had yet to turn the corner and prove himself as a future superstar.
The results were showing that maybe he would turn into a stud defensive center field, with average results at the plate and not a lite version of Mike Trout many were projecting.
The season started off with more of the same, but then a funny thing happened, and Buxton has begun turning his season around with a stellar 2nd half. In 40 games since the all star game he has a 312/357/603 batting line with 9 HRs, and 9 SBs.
Combined with his defense and base running, it’s help Buxton accumulate a 4.8 WAR so far, and he could finish the season at about 5.5 WAR despite the poor start.
If he was able to keep this pace up over a full season Buxton would have been quietly drawing some MVP chatter. Perhaps, he is finally breaking out!
For collectors, Buxton has flashed his potential for several years now, but the problem has always been consistency. However, where there is risk, there can be reward and Buxton’s inconsistency has pushed his card prices into the value territory.
Right now there is a potential bargain to scoop up with his 2013 Bowman Chrome prospect auto card for only $129.99. If you believe that Buxton has indeed finally broken out and will build on his hot 2nd half, then this might be the time to buy low.
