Unlike Alex Bregman of the Houston Astros who is perceived as not reaching his high expectations right out of the gates (and subsequently seeing his card value decline), rookies like New York Yankees Aaron Judge has seen the opposite happen to his card value.
At the start of the season, his 2013 Bowman Chrome Draft autographed rookie (BGS Graded 9.5/10) could be had for $99 or under depending on the final auction price.
People were naturally concerned about his extremely high strikeout rate and questioning whether he would be able to adapt to Major League pitchers routinely taking advantage of his large strike zone (the guy is a giant standing at 6-foot-7-inches).
While some of those concerns still linger, he has hit four homeruns already and is batting a respectable .275.
That seems to have propelled his card value to $160 already and could climb higher as long as he can lower his strikeout rate even further and hit more homers.
It’s a risky proposition to buy now as the buy low opportunity is gone – unless you really believe Judge has turned a corner and is the bonafide slugger everyone expected him to be already two weeks into the season.
