Trading Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox couldn’t have been an easy decision, but when the White Sox knew they were getting a top prospect of Yoan Moncada’s calibre, they couldn’t say no, could they?
A super-talented switch hitter with good raw power and speed to boot, Moncada has been touted as a top 5 prospect by many baseball scouts. He did exceptionally well, as expected, in the minors. But when Moncada was called up by the Red Sox late last season, some of the shine came off.
In eight games played with 19 at-bats, he batted .211 and struck out a whopping 12 times. Moncada couldn’t play up to the hype. The good news is that he has a fresh start with a new team that still believes in his potential.
Unfortunately, for collectors, the price of his 2016 Bowman Chrome rookie autographed card seems to be based on his pre-Major League performance. Currently selling at over $300 for a base auto on eBay, that seems an awfully high price to pay.
Contrast that to his new teammate Lucas Giolito when the price of his rookie card price dropped after he similarly struggled during his first stint in the majors. That created a potential buy low opportunity as we previously discussed.
Whether to invest or not in Moncada really comes down to the same question we asked for Giolito. Do you believe like the White Sox do that Moncada can still be the stud player he has the potential to be?
If the answer is yes, then you should buy now at the expectation the value of his rookie card will climb even higher as he adjusts accordingly in the big leagues. But at his current price point, the risk is high there won’t be any return on investment.
